Despite the fact that Warner Bros. would be absolutely out of its mind to release a new, big-budget ‘Batman’ reboot film with an R-rating when you watch the trailers for Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” it does seem like the film pushes the boundaries of PG-13. And according to the filmmaker, though fans might hope for a special R-rated cut of the film in the future, “The Batman” is and was always going to be a PG-13 affair.

Speaking to Den of Geek, Matt Reeves talks about the tone of “The Batman” and how it was always envisioned as a PG-13 film. So, no, don’t go expecting the Reeves Cut or whatever.
“In my mind, the movie was always going to be a gritty, edgy, noir, thrilling spectacle that was PG-13,” Reeves said. “That was always what it was, but I always knew that we’d be pushing the limits of what that could be, and so we didn’t really have to cut anything. The promotional materials that you’re seeing, they’re fully reflective of the tone of the movie.”
He added, “There isn’t some special cut of this movie where it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, here’s the R rating that you’ve been desperately wanting.’ I didn’t have to suddenly start drastically cutting the movie or anything like that.”
After Zack Snyder’s very obvious unhappiness with the theatrical release of “Justice League,” followed by David Ayer’s situation on “Suicide Squad,” it just seems as if fans are expecting this sort of studio interference in all DC superhero films. So, even before we get to see the finished, theatrical release of “The Batman,” fans are just assuming Matt Reeves’ vision was hampered by studio notes and there’s this ultra-brutal ‘Batman’ film that we’ll never get to see. Well, sorry to disappoint you, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with this feature.
“The Batman” arrives in theaters on March 4.
