Got a Tip?

Matthew Vaughn Denies Taylor Swift Is Actually Mystery Author Behind ‘Argylle’ Novel

Conspiracy theories are a dime a dozen nowadays. But one of the more harmless conspiracies that has been circulating online recently is that Taylor Swift is actually secretly moonlighting as a writer. Not only that, her debut book was bought up for millions and is being turned into the movie, “Argylle.” Well, the filmmaker behind that movie, Matthew Vaughn is here to set the record straight.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, director Matthew Vaughn ruined the lives of Swifties everywhere who were utterly convinced Taylor Swift wrote the novel that served as the basis for “Argylle.” How did this theory come to be? Well, it all started when it was announced that “Argylle” was being made into a movie, based on an unreleased novel by an author named Elly Conway. When people tried to figure out what else Conway had written, she doesn’t show up anywhere online, so it’s clearly a pseudonym.

Swifties, armed with this information, decided to put the pieces together—a mystery author using a pseudonym, a book named after a specific type of sweater that Taylor Swift has shown to love, and a character in the book being a Scottish Fold breed of cat, which Swift has two of. Therefore, logic (apparently) dictates that Taylor Swift is actually Elly Conway. Case closed! Well, not really.

“I’m not a big internet guy, and it was actually my daughter who came up to me — this is the power of celebrity and the internet — and said, ‘You never told me Taylor wrote the book!’” said Vaughn. “And I’m looking at her going, ‘What are you talking about Taylor Swift wrote the book? She didn’t write the book!’ And I was laughing because I was like, ‘It’s not true! She didn’t write the book!’ But my daughter was convinced of it.”

He added, “There is a real book… and it’s a really good book. And there is an Elly Conway who wrote the book, but it’s not Taylor Swift. And I say that because I imagine Taylor Swift has a load of people trying to jump on her bandwagon left, right, and center, and I don’t want to be a part of that club. I did read the conspiracies and I was like, ‘Wow, they don’t leave a stone unturned!’ But it’s not Taylor Swift. She definitely didn’t write the book.”

While Vaughn isn’t here to give details about Elly Conway, it would appear the idea that she is actually Taylor Swift is just not true at all. So, who is Elly Conway? It really doesn’t matter. And let’s be real, if Taylor Swift did write a book and wanted to sell it to a major studio, she wouldn’t have to use a pseudonym at all. She would plaster her name all over it and release it to the masses, selling a billion copies and turning it into the biggest film on the planet.

As a fun side note, Vaughn did reveal in the interview that he actually has a Scottish Fold cat because his daughter is a huge fan of Swift and wanted the same type of cat. So, there is a little connection.

“Argylle” is set to arrive in theaters on February 2.
