In a world where studios are desperate to create the next big franchise, it’s always interesting to see these sorts of things pop up in a truly organic way. “John Wick” is a good example of this. You can also lump in Ti West’s “X” trilogy, which began as a cheap slasher but in very short order, has turned into one of the most interesting horror franchises of the past decade. And it appears West, along with his muse, Mia Goth, is going out with a bang with the upcoming trilogy-ending “MaXXXine,” as we learn the rest of the cast who are joining the film.

Today, A24 has announced the rest of the main cast that will join Mia Goth in Ti West’s upcoming horror film, “MaXXXine.” The supporting cast includes Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Halsey, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon. Obviously, this makes the third film in the “X” trilogy the most star-studded of the trio. In the first two films, Goth was pretty much the sole focus of the films. In fact, in “X,” she had double duty, not only playing the survivor of the vicious slasher but also playing the slasher herself, Pearl.

The “X” trilogy, so far, has been a very unique horror franchise. The first film, “X,” plays out like a twisted “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”-esque slasher with a grimy ‘70s vibe. That film is followed by “Pearl,” which is a prequel that transports viewers to the Depression era and finds our protagonist (who would grow old and murder people in “X”) as a hopeful, if not very odd young woman trying to flee from her sad existence and find stardom. Now, we have “MaXXXine,” which will serve as a sequel to “X” and find our survivor trying to make it big in Hollywood during the ‘80s. As you can see, West has created a wholly original franchise that takes some inspiration from incredible films from the past but with a tragic, incredibly strange twist.
It’s unclear when “MaXXXine” will arrive in theaters. However, with production starting this month, it’s possible we can see this film sneak in before the end of 2023. There is a chance that A24 holds it until early 2024, as March was a great month for “X” to debut. We shall see.
