Nevermind the horrible special effects or the hilariously bad dialogue (sample: Sienna Miller’s Baroness to Stormshadow [enthusiastically], “He’s given up!” Stormshadow [with concern], “He never gives up.”), maybe the 12-year-old inner child nerdlingers at AICN, Chud and Hitflix are right: G.I. Joe maybe is a whole party keg of stupid fun?
Perhaps if you go in with an advanced irony mindset this picture does delight and provide, big, dumb, full of cum laughs and enjoyment? Apple released this new clip today and while we generally try to eschew so-bad-it’s-good stances, we have to admit, there’s some quality inanity in this teaser scene. Will “G.I. Joe: The Rise Of the Cobra,” at least provide the escapist thrills that this summer has been sorely lacking so far? Most likely we’ll never find out. We’ve been told there will be screenings, but so far we haven’t heard word of one since, and call us crazy, but we won’t be paying to see this one. And kids, theater hopping is bad, don’t you know?
Btw, a great Twitter quote from Rope Of Silicon (via InContention), that sums up this calculated fiasco perfectly.
“Good work Paramount, not screening G.I. Joe got everyone to talk about it (some twice) and you don’t even have to deal with the reviews.”
Amen. These guys took a risk, but they clearly knew what they were doing and it paid off. Though their resolve is waning. For a good 3-4 critical days in the week, they pulled off the coup of the year by proudly sporting ‘G.I. Joe’ with the stats juked 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, but that score seems to be plummeting as real discerning film critics see the film and it’s fallen to 79% fresh.Though, like ROS essentially says above, it’s too late now. The scores could fall to zero and the picture would still probably rake in a few double digit millions. Though a small part of us thinks that even heartlanders aren’t this dumb and since the imbroglio is so public, it could backfire. That’s probably wishful thinking though.
