With top composers like Danny Elfman, Clint Mansell and Cliff Martinez all having graduated from the rock’n’roll world (Oingo Boingo, Pop Will Eat Itself and Red Hot Chili Peppers respectively), the idea of having bands tuning up a movie is becoming more and more and common these days, with Yo La Tengo, Mogwai, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers and Basement Jaxx among the many acts who’ve written film scores in recent years. The latest to join them; Canadian indie rock band Metric.
The Emily Haines-led group, no strangers to the film world having lent the song “Black Sheep” to the fictional band The Clash At Demonhead for last year’s “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” have announced via their official site that they’ll be forming a dream team with Oscar-winning “Lord of the Rings” composer Howard Shore, to score David Cronenberg‘s latest film, the Don DeLillo adaptation “Cosmopolis.”
The band write in a blog post: “We just confirmed we will be working with our favorite film composer Howard Shore on the score for a new David Cronenberg movie starring Robert Pattinson, minus the vampires! It’s an adaptation of the book ‘Cosmopolis’ by Don DeLillo, and the themes are right in tune with the overall mood of the world at the moment. In ‘Cosmopolis,’ the rat has become a unit of currency!” They previously collaborated with Shore for the theme tune for last year’s “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” a track entitled “Eclipse [All Yours]” (listen below).
“Cosmopolis” stars Robert Pattinson who plays a twentysomething billionaire on a limo ride across town to get a haircut as his world collapses around him, and the cast also includes Juliette Binoche, Samantha Morton, Jay Baruchel, Paul Giamatti, Sarah Gadon and Mathieu Amalric. After the minor misfire of “A Dangerous Method,” we’re certainly hoping Cronenberg gets back on track here, and Metric’s presence is certainly an intriguing one. The film is now wrapped, and heading for a release some time in 2012, with a festival debut at Cannes or Toronto most likely.
