It looks like Michael Bay is following in Steven Spielberg’s footsteps. Well, kinda.
Finally departing the robots-fighting-robots “Transformers” franchise, the director has his sights set on two new films, and this time, only one has robots! According to Variety, the director known for his explosions, circling shots, and questionable treatment of female characters has lined up “6 Underground” and “Robopocalypse” as his next two projects.
First up will be “6 Underground,” which is written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, the duo behind “Deadpool” and “Zombieland.” While not much is known about the film, expect guns, explosions, an American flag, and some quippy dialogue. “6 Underground” is scheduled to begin production this summer with a Summer 2019 release date.
Next up, for Mr. Bayhem, is “Robopocalypse.” This film has been a long-in-development project that was originally set up for Steven Spielberg to helm. Unfortunately, with scheduling conflicts, Speilberg just hasn’t been able to fit “Robopocalypse” on his calendar. So, what’s the next best thing? Well, Michael Bay, of course. Ugh.
As you might expect, “Robopocalypse” is a sci-fi film that tells the story of the world after the robot uprising. The film is based on the novel by Daniel H. Wilson, and if we know anything about Bay, he’ll treat the source material with reverence, and will create a highly intellectual, thought-provoking film like what Alex Garland did with “Ex Machina.” Right? Right? Damn.
It’s hard to imagine the time, back in the ‘90s, when Bay wasn’t just a parody of himself. This is the guy who made “The Rock” and “Bad Boys,” which for my money are two of the most fun action movies of their time. However, Bay has now spent the last decade in “Transformers” hell, and with only a couple non-robot films in between, it looks like the filmmaker has lost that touch that allowed him to be the king of fun, popcorn action films.
Hopefully, “6 Underground” and “Robopocalypse” are a return to form for Michael Bay.
