Michael Giacchino has cashed in his Oscar win for “Up” to grab the job of scoring the upcoming sci-fi adventure “John Carter Of Mars.”
The film, which boasts a pretty stellar cast including Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Polly Walker, Willem Dafoe, Lynn Collins, Bryan Cranston, Ciaran Hinds, James Purefoy, Thomas Haden Church, Mark Strong and Daryl Sabara, is a live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough’s “John Carter of Mars” series, about a Civil War soldier who is transported to Mars and embarks on alien adventures.
The film is currently shooting in Utah and is expected to wrap sometime in July. Filmed using motion-capture, expect a lengthy post-production schedule with a release date not until late 2011, if not 2012. This project has been kicking around Hollywood for years, but it’s one that seems to have landed in the right hands. We’re eagerly and curiously anticipating the project. As for Giacchino, we liked his score for “Up” (though we think Alexandre Desplat’s work for “Fantastic Mr. Fox” should’ve won) and given that he’s worked in the milieu, scoring “Star Trek” and “Lost,” we think he’s a good fit here.
