We are almost 25 years removed from the release of Michael Mann’s crime epic “Heat.” And even though the film was reasonably well-received upon its release, in the decades since, “Heat” has grown in stature to epic proportions becoming cinephile catnip and turned into a high point of the crime film genre. And to celebrate the upcoming 25th anniversary of the film in 2020, it appears that Mann is ready to given an update on a new adventure for the characters he’s been quietly planning for a few years now. Albeit not in a new film.

According to a new tweet by Mann, the filmmaker teased the release date of a new novel that will be co-written by himself and author Reed Farrel Coleman, which will contain characters from “Heat” and will be published sometime in 2020.

“Episode 162 of One Heat Minute special guest is Reed Farrel Coleman, New York Times Bestselling author with whom I am co-writing a novel with the characters of Heat to be published by Harper Collins next year,” tweeted Mann.
Obviously, it’s a bit early to know details about the novel and what the plot might be, but the story was initially said to be a ‘Heat’ prequel when first mentioned three years ago. Regardless, the idea that Mann is exploring the characters further is undoubtedly welcome news for fans of the film and those looking for a quality crime novel.
Interestingly, the special podcast that Mann references in his tweet will wrap up shortly with Michael Mann as a guest. “One Heat Minute” is a podcast devoted solely to the 1995 film and breaks down the film one minute at a time. Perhaps, Mann will go further in talking about the upcoming novel when he shows up? We’ll find out soon enough. The episode with Mann as a guest is set to be released on July 6.
