Michael Mann Hopeful ‘Heat 2’ Will “Possibly” Shoot In 2026 After Rumblings Of Budgeting Issues At WB

Michael Mann is teasing that his long-gestating sequel to his landmark crime flick “Heat” could potentially move forward into production sometime in 2026, in some new statements the filmmaker has made concerning “Heat 2.”

Variety has posted some promising new quotes from the director on “Heat 2” as he attended the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea. Mann said of the status of his highly anticipated sequel, “I look forward to possibly shooting it in 2026. We’re in the middle of doing all the things, budgeting, scheduling, casting process.”

This comes after there had been rumblings from Puck News that Warner Bros. had been balking at the budget asked by Mann (with an aim to get that number down as alluded to by Mann) and some early interest from Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”) for a key role after previous talk that Adam Driver (“Ferrari”) and Austin Butler (“Caught Stealing”) were in the mix as well.

When the moderator at the masterclass event honoring the original 1995 film mentioned the original pic being an “Al Pacino film,” Mann was quick to refute that characterization by calling it a group effort rather than built on Pacino’s performance alone.

“I don’t think it’s Al Pacino’s film. That film’s De Niro’s film, Val Kilmer’s film, Jon Voight’s film, Mykelti Williamson,” Mann told the audience in Busan. “It was an ensemble of brilliant actors and one of the best experiences ever as a director.”

Mann may be telegraphing the chatter that a group of high-profile actors is gearing up to take roles in the follow-up, rather than a single big name at the center, that is expected to act as both a prequel and a sequel spanning multiple decades, along with locations outside of Los Angeles and the United States, as the script was being co-written with “Heat 2” author Meg Gardiner (the feature iteration could be altered slightly from the novelization).

Of course, you can be sure we’ll be on any official casting announcements or updates concerning “Heat 2” when they are made public.
