In the video, after they talk about “Ferrari” and his work on the Archives, the conversation quickly goes to one of Mann’s most surprising picks— “Turbo.” Yes, that’s right, one of Mann’s favorite films of all time is the 2013 Dreamworks Animation hit, “Turbo,” about the racing snail voiced by Ryan Reynolds. In his reasoning for the pick, Mann talks about watching the film with his granddaughter and thinking it was really well written and “hilarious.” Didn’t see that one coming, huh?
Many of the films he picked in the rest of the video overlaps with his previous Letterboxd post. But there are still some worth mentioning.
Towards the end of the video, he brings up “Memories of Murder,” which is one of the absolute very best crime thrillers. He also mentioned “I Saw the Devil” as another South Korean film that he absolutely loves. This is from the guy who made “Manhunter,” so he knows a thing or two about crafting a serial killer film.
Another interesting pick that seems obvious upon further inspection is “Dr. Strangelove.” He talks about how that film was a “formative” movie in his life.
