How’s this for the most unlikely ensemble cast? Deadline reports that “SNL” alum Kate McKinnon and New Zealand comedic actor Jermaine Clement are the latest to join Jason Momoa in the Warner Bros. adaptation of “Minecraft.” The news comes just one day after Jennifer Coolidge joined the cast of the upcoming blockbuster. That’s quite the motley crew for one movie, which on paper looks like a good hang for all involved.
McKinnon, Clement, and Coolidge join Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen as Momoa’s co-stars on the picture. Jared Hess helms “Minecraft” for WB/Legendary, a feature film take on the wildly popular Mojang video game. The film is shooting now in NZ, which probably half-explains Clement’s involvement. But based on him and McKinnon along with Jack Black, expect heavy comedic vibes on this one. Hell, even if this is the last thing anyone expected for Jennifer Coolidge after “The White Lotus,” it’ll be nice to see her work with this crew, too.
Producers on “Minecraft” include Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Momoa, Torfi Frans Olafsson, Vu Bui, and a posthumous credit for Jill Messick. Executive producers include Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza, and Jonathan Spaihts. Vertigo, Mojang/Microsoft, and Momoa’s banner On The Roam join Warner Bros. and Legendary on the production side of things.
Fresh off of her turn as Weird Barbie in “Barbie,” McKinnon also has Hulu‘s “In The Blink Of An Eye” on the way. Clement starred in “Avatar: The Way Of Water” back in 2022, and will return for James Cameron‘s 2025 sequel “Avatar 3.” Up next for Clement? Sony‘s “Harold & The Purple Crayon” and “Wildwood,” a stop-motion animation feature based on the novel of the same name. And fresh off her Emmy victory for “The White Lotus,” Coolidge has crime thriller “Riff Raff” on the way with Pete Davidson, Dustin Hoffman, Gabrielle Union, Ed Harris, Brian Cox, Lewis Pullman, Bill Murray, and more.
“Minecraft” hits theaters next year on April 4, 2025. Want a plot synopsis? Here’s a logline: A teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers must save the Overworld after the Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction.
