One of the last 2023 blockbusters has an official streaming release date. Variety reports that “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” lands on Paramount+ next week on January 25. Then it hits international markets starting in February. But there’s something interesting in addition to that news: the latest installment in the “M:I” series lost the “Part One” in its name, which basically confirms the upcoming sequel will indeed receive a new subtitle. Paramount confirmed the title change with a new poster, eliminating “Part One” from the title. See below.
“Dead Reckoning Part Two” got delayed last summer after the guild strikes put production on hiatus, moving from June 28, 2024 to May 23, 2025. That may be for the best, as “Dead Reckoning” wasn’t the hit Paramount and Tom Cruise expected it to be. The film did fine in theaters, taking in $567.5 million globally, and critics generally loved it, but it wasn’t the runaway success that “M:I – Fallout” was in 2018. A couple of years of separation from “Dead Reckoning” could be a necessary palette cleanser for audiences as they await the eighth film in the series.
As for whether “M:I 8” will be the final one of the series, who knows? Cruise is over 60 now, but with “Top Gun 3” on the horizon and a shiny new film deal with Warner Bros., he shows no signs of slowing down. But despite a new title, the upcoming “M:I” sequel will wrap up the story of “Dead Reckoning,” which sees Ethan Hunt and the IMF face off against Esai Morales‘ big bad who wants to help a sentient AI take over the world or something. Christopher McQuarrie directs the sequel, as he’s done for the past two “M:I” films.
Along with Cruise, “Dead Reckoning” stars Morales, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Pem Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Shea Whigham, Cary Elwes, and more. “Dead Reckoning” will stream exclusively on Paramount+, so for fans of the “Mission: Impossible” series, maybe it’s time to subscribe to the streamer if you haven’t already.
