Sometimes a movie lover has to take a hard left turn into murky territory…
On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I choose the less-travelled cinematic path and wade into modern exploitation cinema with a pair of movies, most likely not on your radar at the moment, that land on very different ends of the genre’s spectrum. That’s right folks, it’s mid-January at the movies. Not so much a down time, as things are plenty busy with the public catching up on awards titles and blockbusters, but moreso there’s a distinctive dearth of new and interesting work being released right now. Not a new problem, of course. Even with these limited choices, though, we’ve landed on a double feature that shines a light on the vast potential that still exists in culty, real-deal exploitation cinema.
LISTEN: AYT Swoons Over PTA‘s Masterful ‘Phantom Thread’
We start off riffing on Brian Taylor‘s new effort, “Mom And Dad,” a rather batshit crazy B-movie about parents overcome with an unexplained desire to kill their offspring that hits VOD and some theaters this Friday. This time out, Taylor is without usual directing partner, Mark Neveldine, who worked with him on the two “Crank” movies and that terribly-reviewed “Ghost Rider” sequel, among others. It’s a fun little piece of trash, this one. On the back half of this episode we discuss a far more esoteric current film, “The Road Movie,” a bizarrely hypnotic Russian dash cam doc that my co-host describes as part “Koyaanisqatsi,” part WorldStarHipHop. It’s absolutely worth tracking down. (Go here to rent on VOD or see if it will play at cinemas in your city.)
