Since recasting Kevin Spacey’s role with Christopher Plummer, Ridley Scott’s “All the Money in the World” has gone from usual year end Scott curiosity to a must see film of December, and a new trailer is here, Spacey-free. Plummer plays the role of billionaire J. Paul Getty whose grandson, John Paul Getty III, is kidnapped. Here’s the official synopsis:
All the Money in the World follows the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer) and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother Gail (Michelle Williams) to convince his billionaire grandfather (Christopher Plummer) to pay the ransom. When Getty Sr. refuses, Gail attempts to sway him as her son’s captors become increasingly volatile and brutal. With her son’s life in the balance, Gail and Getty’s advisor (Mark Wahlberg) become unlikely allies in the race against time that ultimately reveals the true and lasting value of love over money.
The turn around on this impressive considering it was only last month that Scott pulled the film from AFI to reshoot and edit key scenes, bringing back Wahlberg and Williams in the process. One thing you can say about Ridley Scott is that he can work really fast. We’ll see if Michelle Williams and even, insanely enough, Plummer pull off Oscar nominations, though Scott films are usually really hit or miss when it comes to the Academy.
“All the Money in the World” will be released on December 22nd.
