The independent thriller “The Whistleblower,” a German-Canadian co-production that has had Rachel Weisz attached for some time, has added a supporting cast. Vanessa Redgrave, Monica Bellucci and David Strathairn are all on board, alongside Danish star Nikolaj Lie Kaas (“Just Another Love Story,” “Angels & Demons”) and relative newcomer Anna Anissimova, who’s also currently filming “Father of Invention” with Kevin Spacey.
Larysa Kondracki, the Canadian director behind the acclaimed short film “Viko,” starring Luke Treadaway (“Clash of the Titans”), is directing, and has co-written the script with Ellis Kirwan. It’s based on a true story of a Nebraskan police detective who volunteered in post civil war Bosnia, and uncovered a sex trafficking ring being covered up by senior U.N. officials. It sounds like dynamite material, and we’re not sure that they could find a better cast, particularly with such a meaty role for Weisz — we saw her on stage in London a few weeks back in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” and it was one of the best theatrical performances we’ve ever seen.
The producers of the film are referring to “Silkwood” and “The Insider” as inspirations for the movie, which only makes us more enthused. Shooting starts in Bucharest on October 26th.
