'Moon Knight': Marvel Taps Indie Directors Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead For Multiple Episodes

Marvel Studios has added two more directors for their upcoming Disney+ series “Moon Knight.” The Hollywood Reporter reveals that indie filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have joined Egyptian director Mohamed Diab on the supernatural hero show (Moorehead confirmed the news on Twitter, see below). The pair are reportedly working on “multiple episodes,” but an exact number wasn’t given. Benson and Moorehead are actors and directors, known for the films, “Endless,” and most recently, the surreal sci-fi head trip, “Synchronic.”

Star Wars” and “X-Men” franchise alumni Oscar Isaac had been reportedly in talks for the lead role of Marc Spector. However, his official confirmation was absent during Marvel’s presentation at the Disney Investor Day event last month. But his participation was confirmed by Moorehead on Twitter this evening as well.

There are multiple incarnations of the Marvel character Marc Spector. Most recently, he’s a former professional boxer turned mercenary that becomes Mr. Knight, aka Moon Knight, a powerful and violent vigilante in the Marvel universe empowered with abilities granted to him from the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. He has multiple other personalities, including playboy millionaire Steven Grant and NYC cabbie Jake Lockley.

Previous trade reports had “Moon Knight” filming aiming for a start this March. Reported production locations for the series include the United Kingdom and Budapest, Hungry. Isaac shot “Dune” in Budapest, and Marvel shot some exterior scenes in the city for “Black Widow.”

Loki,” which is being primed for a Season 2, is about to complete shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, with “Ms. Marvel” and “Hawkeye” series just starting their filming, which will extend into 2021. Other shows on Marvel’s horizon include Don Cheadle‘s “Armor Wars” and “Ironheart,” which will focus on heroes with armor suits and Tony Stark tech. There is also a Skrull-focused crossover event series titled “Secret Invasion” that will reunite “Captain Marvel” actors Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn; there is a possibility it will have some connection to director Nia DaCosta‘s “Captain Marvel 2.”

With “Moon Knight,” directors assembled casting announcements should be coming very soon as pre-production has already started.
