We are now almost three weeks removed from the fairly tepid launch of the Apple TV+ streaming service. The new content platform has a ton of publicity and a large company behind it, but it appears that the early reviews for original series like “The Morning Show,” “Dickinson,” and “See” tempered the expectations of potential subscribers, leading to a less-than-ideal launch for the new streaming service. Well, according to producers on “The Morning Show,” those reviews that criticized the series might have been more negative than they deserved.
“The Morning Show” executive producers, Mimi Leder (a filmmaker who recently released “On the Basis of Sex” last year and directed episodes of the new Apple series) and Kerry Ehrin, spoke at the recent Code Media in Los Angeles (via The Verge) and had some thoughts about those harsh reviews that her TV series received. Let’s just say that Leder isn’t convinced that all the reviews were discussing the show, and maybe some of them had a bit of bias against the platform.
“When those reviews came in, I didn’t know what show they were watching,” Leder said. “I thought they were nuts. I thought there were a lot of Apple haters who just wanted Apple to fail. The reviews felt like an attack on Apple.”
Ehrin reiterated the thought and added, “When you see reviews, they’re looking at it from the whole business aspect, [like] ‘what is Apple doing?’ It’s kind of separate from us.”
Ultimately, it appears that Apple isn’t taking the negative reviews to heart. In fact, the producers say that the tech company is very happy with the viewership of the new series. And according to Leder, as long as the folks who worked on the series and viewers are happy, the critics’ opinions don’t matter.
“People love it, and we love it,” she said. “That’s what matters.”
You can stream “The Morning Show” on Apple TV+ now.
