'mother!' Divides, But There's So Much To Discuss! [Podcast]

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I dig into the career thus far of Darren Aronofsky, the filmmaker behind last weekend’s “mother!“, a fascinating film that’s swiftly divided audiences and critics even after a less-than-stellar box office haul. It’s undeniably mind-boggling to consider a studio exec reading the script and greenlighting the film, but that’s what happened and now we’ve got the glory or pain (depending on your feelings of the finished result) of “mother!” to relish in and discuss. (Our review from the Venice premiere was glowingly positive, and a blast to read.) In keeping with the controversial wide release from Paramount, (kudos to the studio for defending the film, by the way) Joe is on the con side while I reside firmly with pro.

LISTEN TO: AYT talks “It

As we discuss the new release, we do dip in and out of Aronofsky’s other works to date, finding much to disagree on as well. In the back 20 minutes of the show, we even bring back our segment HOLD UP, in which we examine a movie from the past that one or both of us really like to see if it, in fact, holds up for us. For this show, we fittingly revisit “Black Swan,” the filmmaker’s most successful film critically, financially and in the awards it won. It’s a vital film that, like all of Aronofsky’s work, demands a strong opinion. There are no easy answers or shrugs of indifference with this filmmaker.
