David Lowery is no stranger to taking big swings with his films. Even when he’s done more four-quadrant features, such as “Pete’s Dragon” and “Peter Pan & Wendy,” Lowery has taken risks. But it sounds as if his next film, “Mother Mary,” might be his biggest swing to date.
Speaking on the Last Video Store podcast, before jumping into the format of the pod, David Lowery was asked about “Mother Mary.” And according to the filmmaker, it’s a “weird, weird movie” and he’s not actually sure how it’s all going to turn out.
“I’m in the edit right now and I have been wondering, ‘What is this movie?’” Lowery said. “I know what I set out to make and that is indeed what I’ve made, but it is so wild. It is a movie that will provoke, I am sure, a lot of strong feelings, in every possible direction. In so much as it’s one of the few movies I’ve made not based on something else, it feels very true to who I am, and very close to me, but it is also consistently surprising me in ways that I did not anticipate… What I’ve got on my computer now is probably pretty much what it’s going to be, it will just get cleaned up. It’s a weird, weird movie.”

For those unaware, “Mother Mary” stars Anne Hathaway and Michael Coel and tells the story of a pop star (Hathaway) and a woman (Coel) designing a dress for her. Adding to the risks involved is the fact that it’s a musical with songs written by musicians Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX. Filming is said to have begun in May 2023 and only wrapped in July 2024. So, it was a long shoot, as well.
It’s unclear when we might see “Mother Mary” arrive in theaters, but we’re excited to see what weirdness Lowery has up his sleeve.
