When you think of movies that best exemplify the greatest mothers in history, you might not immediately think of A24’s upcoming horror film “Hereditary.” Early word on the film (including our review) says that it’s great. But honestly, nowhere in any of the reviews or marketing materials leading up to its release says just how great of a Mother’s Day film it might be.
To fix this, A24 released a new trailer for the film, and in it, they talk about how “Hereditary” might be a horror film, but it’s also a pretty great Mother’s Day flick as well. Sadly, it won’t arrive until after this Sunday’s holiday, but maybe you and your mom can celebrate a belated Mother’s Day by watching the film in theaters.
All kidding aside, the scenes in the trailer are horrifying and startling. Exactly what we’ve seen in every bit of marketing so far from the film. They’re leaning hard into the clicking noise that’s been prevalent in the trailers leading up to this. Overall, while obviously going for a bit of humor with the juxtaposition of visuals and messaging, this is definitely another strong trailer for the horror film. If anything, it’s a great prank to send your mother to tell her you’re thinking about her.
If you’re not excited about this film, then there’s something wrong. “Hereditary” is the feature film directorial debut of Ari Aster and stars Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, Ann Dowd, and Milly Shapiro.
“Hereditary” opens June 8 in theaters.
