“Star Wars” fandom has generated its own offshoot of films about the culture surrounding the saga, ranging from the regrettable “Fanboys,” to the documentary about “Elstree 1976,” to Patrick Read Johnson’s still unreleased “5-25-77” (seriously, what’s going on with that movie?). And now another is on the way, hoping to capture the magic of… standing in line.
“The Line Kings” will be directed by Wally Cleaver aka Tony Dow, and follow a group of fans who camp out on Hollywood Boulevard to try and win a walk-on role in the next “Star Wars,” leading to a showdown with rival enthusiasts. A bit of a goofy premise, but perhaps dorky enough to capture the imagination of those for whom waiting for hours and sometimes days — even in the age of advanced ticketing and seat reservations — is a vital part of the “Star Wars” experience. For many, the annual chance to hang out with the fans in anticipation of the next “Star Wars” movie, is nearly as exciting as the movie itself. And if “The Line Kings” can capture that, then perhaps it’ll succeed.
We’ll find out soon as production begins this spring. [Variety]
