Reboots, sequels, and prequels are all the rage in Hollywood. Building franchises and expanding IP is the name of the game in 2023. So, it’s not a surprise that Prime Video is hoping a TV series based around “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” could be the next big hit. And in the first little tease of the series, it’s clear the streaming service nabbed some great actors to fill out the title roles. Not only that, it would appear Prime Video has quite a few big projects debuting during the last half of the year.
While we don’t get a whole lot in the way of plot in the little quick tease of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” we do see Maya Erskine and Donald Glover in the title roles. Of course, if you follow the news, you probably know that Erskine wasn’t the first choice for the series. In fact, when it was originally announced, Phoebe Waller-Bridge was set to star opposite Glover. But that fell apart and Erskine was called in to replace the actress. Erskine is no slouch herself, coming off the acclaimed hit comedy series, “PEN15.”
“Mr. & Mrs. Smith” follows a similar story as the original 2005 film of the same name. A seemingly happy married couple is shocked to learn that they are both assassins working for competing agencies. Not only that, they’ve been hired to kill each other. The drama just writes itself, right?
No exact release date was given for “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” but it is teased for a September release. In the video below, there are also teases for several other big profile films and TV series, including another franchise series, “Gen V,” which is the first spinoff of the popular “The Boys” TV series. That also is expected to debut in September.
