If we’re going to look at pioneers in the streaming space, while we want to namecheck David Fincher who took “House Of Cards” to Netflix in 2013—one of the first big A-list talent milestones in the streaming era—not far behind him has to be comedian Adam Sandler. When Netflix started hyper analyzing its data in the early 2010s, its algorithms told them that Sandler’s movies were super popular globally. So before Sandler even really knew what streaming was or its possibilities—at least according to him in a couple of recent interviews—Netflix came to him with a huge deal and the idea of doing a half dozen films for them.
Netflix was doing so well back then, obviously cost wasn’t an issue, Sandler got paid and paid enough to entice him over to the streamer to what has essentially been full-time. That six-picture deal has long expired and while it’s unclear if it ever got re-upped, it doesn’t really matter; Sandler makes all his films at Netflix these days, regardless of his exclusivity; he clearly likes what they have offered him. This sets us up for “Murder Mystery 2,” the sequel to “Murder Mystery” with Jennifer Aniston.
Directed by Jeremy Garelick, the comedy also stars Mark Strong, Mélanie Laurent, Jodie Turner-Smith, John Kani, Kuhoo Verma, Enrique Arce, Zurin Villanueva, Tony Goldwyn, Annie Mumolo with Dany Boon and Adeel Akhtar.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Four years after solving their first murder mystery, Nick and Audrey Spitz (Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston) are now full-time detectives struggling to get their private eye agency off the ground when they’re invited to celebrate the wedding of their friend the Maharaja (Adeel Akhtar) on his private island. But trouble follows the Spitzes again when the groom is kidnapped for ransom soon after the festivities begin — making each glamorous guest, family member, and the bride herself a suspect. MURDER MYSTERY 2 sends Nick and Audrey Spitz on a high-stakes case that finally gives them everything they’ve ever dreamed of: a shot at their detective agency finally becoming successful…and their long-awaited trip to Paris.
“Murder Mystery 2” lands on Netflix on March 31. Watch the new trailer below and the first clip below.
