Hollywood is always trying to find a way to hit certain demographics, and in trying to capture a huge swath of the female moviegoing audience, it’s pretty much a no brainer to take the must-have pregnancy book, “What To Expect When You’re Expecting” — it has sold 16 million copies to date — and turn it into a movie. Movement on the project first started last fall when “Whip It!” writer Shauna Cross was hired on to adapt the book. And now, the film has a director.
Deadline reports that “Nanny McPhee” and “Everybody’s Fine” helmer Kirk Jones will be behind the camera for the film. No specific plot details yet, the the movie is said to be a multi-thread narrative not unlike “Love Actually” that will track five different couples on the path to having a baby.
We’re definitely wary and aren’t really holding out hope that this won’t be much more than your average “Love Actually”-aping rom-com. While that film had its modest charms, it also spawned a legion of terrible followers (hello Garry Marshall) and we really hope Cross puts her stamp on the script, because we’re not expecting Jones to do anything too terribly exciting in the director’s chair.
The plan is to get the film in front of cameras sometime this spring.
