‘Nanny,’ ‘The Exiles,’ ‘Cha Cha Smooth’ & “Navalny’ Top 2022 Sundance Awards

The Sundance Film Festival was decidedly a virtual affair this year, but that didn’t stop the joy from the filmmakers, actors, and artists who were honored at the annual awards ceremony. The big winners this year included “Nanny,” “The Exiles,” “Cha Cha Smooth” and “Navalny,” which took two Audience Awards.

Nikyatu’s “Nanny,” which is still available as an acquisition title at publication, took the prestigious Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. Ben Klein and Violet Columbus’s “The Exiles,” also without distribution, took the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Documentary Competition. Alejandro Loayza Grisi’s Bolivian epic “Utama” won the World Cinema Drama Grand Prize.

Among the Audience Award winners, “Navalny,” “Cha Cha Smooth,” “Girl Picture” and “Framing Agnes” were recognized by viewers. This year, the festival debuted the overall Festival Favorite Award which included the Premieres category and all 84 new feature films at the festival. That prize also went to Daniel Roher’s “Navalny.”

A rare ensemble honor when to the cast of “892” which included John Boyega, Michael Kenneth Williams, Nicole Beharie, Connie Britton, Olivia Washington, and Selenis Leyva.
