Who will Greta Gerwig cast first for her upcoming “Narnia” film for Netflix? Oscar Best Actress-winner Mikey Madison? Gerwig favorite Saoirse Ronan? Or maybe Gerwig plans to go in a different, more brat direction…
Deadline reports the director has her eyes on Charli xcx for a potential role in her upcoming Netflix film. That doesn’t mean it’s a sure thing, but it would be biggest onscreen role for the music star to date, who’s already attached to upcoming projects like Gregg Araki‘s “I Want Your Sex” and Romain Gavras‘ “Sacrifice,” among others. If the news becomes official, it’s a big day for Charli: the Grammy winner was also announced for the 2025 Glastonbury festival earlier.
But it’d be quite a surprise for Charli xcx to get cast before any other big names join Gerwig’s latest project. After all, “Narnia” is one of Hollywood’s most anticipated blockbusters due to the success of “Barbie” in 2023, and Charli’s film career is only in its nascent stage. Coincidentally, Charli xcx did produce a song for the “Barbie” soundtrack: “Speed Drive,” but that doesn’t guarantee she’ll do the same for “Narnia.”
News about “Narnia” should start to trickle out soon, however. Gerwig’s next film has been long in development at Netflix. The streaming giant first announced it would develop series and film projects on C.S. Lewis‘ acclaimed “The Chronicles Of Narnia” in 2018. Two years later, Gerwig signed on to adapt and direct at least two films based on the series.
Since then, Gerwig delivered the highest-grossing movie in the history of Warner Bros. with “Barbie,” which led to a standoff between her and Netflix in a standoff over whether the film would get a run on IMAX screens. Streamer and director reached an agreement on the issue earlier this year: “Narnia” will get a two-week global run in IMAX theaters on Thanksgiving 2026 before the film becomes a Netflix exclusive on Christmas Day.
As for Charl xcx, her rise to international superstardom has made her quickly become highly sought-after for onscreen roles. Her teaming up with “Araki” for “I Want Your Sex” makes perfect sense on paper, and she has a couple of other buzzy upcoming roles too, like in Cathy Yan‘s “The Gallerist” and Daniel Goldhaber‘s “Faces Of Death” remake, which is still looking for distribution. But a role in “Narnia” with Gerwig at the helm would catapult the music icon’s movie career to unreal heights. Will it happen? Stay tuned on that.
