Another week, another trailer for an upcoming original Netflix movie, and this week it’s for “XOXO.” The film is an ensemble piece that resembles those holiday-themed movies by the late Garry Marshall (with none of the A-list stars) crossed with an EDM festival. No, seriously. If that sounds ridiculous or at least slightly silly, then you know what to expect here.

“XOXO” stars Sarah Hyland, Graham Phillips, Brett DelBuono, Chris D’Elia, and Hayley Kiyoko, and follows Ethan (Phillips), a young DJ who gets the biggest break in his life: a slot at a major EDM festival. The only thing is, he just needs to figure out how to get there. The trailer does its best to present an EDM festival in a good light. The movie seems to be filled with lots of dancing, loud beats, bright colors, and people generally having a good time, and while there’s no mention of drugs, there’s plenty of psychedelic imagery to be found.
Netflix is obviously hoping this film hits a nerve with fans of bass drops, but whatever that audience is, it’ll be interesting to see if they tune in. The most obvious film to compare this to is “We Are Your Friends,” which became one of the biggest bombs of 2015. Unlike that film, which had the star power of Zac Efron, “XOXO” hopes the story and music, supervised by British DJ Pete Tong, is enough to separate this film from that failure.
“XOXO” is set to be released August 26th on Netflix.
