What’s wrong, can’t wait for the next adaptation of a young adult novel to hit the silver screen? Well if the box-office-shattering release of “The Hunger Games” didn’t quench your thirst for YA lit-based movies, perhaps a few images from the latest adaptation of “Twilight” saga author Stephenie Meyer’s work will.
While we would have assumed that Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, and maybe even “In Time” director Andrew Niccol had better things to do with their time than bring Meyer’s sci-fi novel “The Host” to the screen, we’re apparently wrong; we've already received an overly dramatic trailer for the film, and new a slew of images have cropped up online via Oh No They Didn't. The pics show more of Ronan as a blue-eyed alien creature, the Liam Hemsworth-like leading man Max Irons pinning Ronan up against a refrigerator (not as exciting as it sounds), and even Krueger looking icy and evil in an image that proves perhaps she should have made the cut for Emma Frost in Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class.”
As you may remember, this one is set in the near future, where alien parasites known as “souls” are able to viciously take over the consciousness of humans. One of these “souls” by the name of Wanderer acquires the body of the dying Melanie Stryder (Ronan), who is set on finding the last of the surviving humans. Kruger plays The Seeker, who’s agenda is to make sure Melanie converts to the dark side, and leaves the human race to die or something like that.
While we didn’t love Niccol’s “In Time,” with a cast that boasts not only Ronan and Kueger, but also William Hurt and Jake Abel as the Jacob to Irons' Edward (or is the other way around?…), our hope is that the helmer can make due with the intriguing premise. We’ll give it to “The Host,” it doesn’t sound like the trifle bore that is the Edward-loves-Bella “Twilight” lovefest, but it certainly doesn’t sound entirely compelling either, especially considering the filmmaker's ability to really delve into the nonsensical.
Here’s to hoping for the best almost exactly a year from now when the film hits theaters on March 29, 2013.
