You can just feel the wheels in motion for the fall and the fall film festival season. While some of these films do not have U.S. release dates yet, many have openings just around the corner and many are already receiving international releases. And so we’ve collected a few new posters that have landed for a quartet of films that have already premiered elsewhere earlier this year, and will likely drop into theaters or festivals in the next six months.
Let’s start with the earliest film, Terry Gilliam’s “The Zero Theorem.” It debuted way back at the 2013 at the Venice Film Festival (our review here). It stars Christoph Waltz, Mélanie Thierry, Lucas Hedges Tilda Swinton, David Thewlis and Matt Damon, and it’s about an eccentric and reclusive computer genius plagued with existential angst in a dystopian future age, perhaps not unlike Gilliam’s “Brazil” but much more technologically advanced. The first poster Gilliam wanted to unveil was banned by the MPAA because it showed a glimpse of Christoph Waltz’s butt. But undeterred Gilliam has released a new poster and it looks pretty cool. The movie hits theaters September 19th and can be seen one month early OnDemand and on iTunes on August 19th.
The next poster is for Jake Paltrow’s “The Young Ones.” This one debuted earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival in January (our review), and it’s got a great cast including Michael Shannon, Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The movie takes place in a post-crisis, not-too-distant future where severe droughts have ravaged the country and water is brutally scarce. And it’s a about a power struggle between a father (Shannon) and a local suitor (Hoult) who is dating his young daughter (Fanning). Not word yet on a U.S. release date, but it wouldn’t surprise us if it hit the Toronto International Film Festival next.
Next up, two movies from Cannes that you will definitely be seeing on the fall film festival circuit, undoubtedly TIFF and maybe Telluride or Fantastic Fest too (Venice tends to only play new titles). The first is David Cronenberg’s “Maps To The Stars” a type of Hollywood satire (though Cronenberg just calls it an observation of real things happening within the industry). It stars Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson, John Cusack, Olivia Williams, Sarah Gadon and more. There’s no release date for it yet, but eOne is said to be releasing it in the fall. You can bet because Cronenberg is Canadian, perhaps the Martin Scorsese of that country, the movie will have a plum spot at TIFF, to be sure. A few new photos of this one here too. Lastly, another Cannes picture from an auteur with a starry cast: Olivier Assayas’ “Clouds Of Sils Maria,” which centers on an aging actress and the relationship between her career and her assistant. It stars Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, Chloe Moretz-Grace, Johnny Flynn, Brady Corbet and more. You can guarantee you’ll see this one at TIFF and maybe Telluride, and then it’ll see a release shortly thereafter (though it’s possible it could be held for the following spring ala “Enemy,” “Under The Skin,” “Only Lovers Left Alive” and “The Double” – the new indie-friendly season). IFC Films will do the releasing in the U.S. So that’s it. Check out each poster and keep your eyes out as release dates can’t be far behind.
