Uncut Jams? Adam Sandler & The Safdie Brothers Reportedly Working On A New Project

Spring is in the air, cinephiles are drunk with rampant Cannes speculation, and maybe we can get more Safdie Brothers films starring Adam Sandler as a treat. While this trio, filmmakers Benny and Josh Safdie and the Sandman gave us the terrific thriller “Uncut Gems” in 2019—where Sandler played the Jewish-American jeweler Howard Ratner, a man with a terrible gambling addiction—there could be more where that came from.

Buried in a piece about why Hollywood cannot connect movie stars with the filmmakers they deserve from IndieWire, the outlet mentions they’re hearing from a source that Sandler and the Safdie sibling duo are “cooking up” another project. However, details aren’t mentioned and that’s about all we have to go on.

Still, we know the Safdie Brothers are making some of the most interesting modern thrillers today, with a gritty 1970s feel – see “Good Time” with Robert Pattinson and the aforementioned “Uncut Gems.” They’re sort of doing what Quentin Tarantino was doing in the 1990s, giving us compelling dirtbag characters with a contemporary twist. Many have been curious if a reunion with Adam Sandler could be in the cards after the actor received some of the best career notices for his incredibly committed performance and it sounds like something is in the works. Knowing what we know about their work so far, it would not surprise if they continue in this seedy and grimy vein.

Meanwhile, in other related Safdie Brothers news, the Showtime series “The Curse,” developed by the Safdie Brothers and Nathan Fielder, is rumored to begin filming this summer with the latter handling directing duties (see below). The new comedy series will star Oscar-winner Emma Stone (“Birdman“) and Fielder as a married couple who finds themselves literally cursed and having to deal with the repercussions as they attempt to conceive a baby and star on a problematic HGTV series.

Benny Safdie also acts and was also recently seen in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” in a supporting role. He has a role in “The Curse” and can be seen next in the “Star Wars” series “Obi-Wan-Kenobi” that debuts on May 27.

We’ll have to wait for more information about what this newly revealed project could be, but even this initial report will probably kick up some unturned stones. Regardless, I’m sure fans of their work will be anticipating any new project from the Safdie Brothers as Sandler continues to grind-out Netflix comedies with his Happy Madison team.
