And honestly, there’s not that much new out there in detail, but we did find several new set photos, videos and quotes.
Remember that idea that Robin Hood would also be the Sheriff of Nottingham? That actually existed and a script based on that idea was written too.
“In fairness, to the guys who did that version, it’s a valid idea, scripter writer Brian Helgeland [“L.A. Confidential”] told Empire. “But I was brought in by Ridley Scott and my orders from him were, ‘I want to do Robin Hood and I want to make it real, how it might actually have been — not the myth.”The screenplay is actually credited to four people: Ethan Reiff & Cyrus Voris, Helgeland and Tom Stoppard, so we’re going to safely assume that “the guys” who did the orignal version are Ethan Reiff & Cyrus Voris since the 2006 version of the script, simply titled, “Nottingham” — is far before Helegland and Stoppard came on to do overhauls and rewrites (the rewrites go in order, Reiff & Voris, Helgeland and Stoppard and apparently the project cost a shitload even before production started because millions were paid overtime for all the versions.)
Many have suggested set photos look like “Gladiator” set in Sherwood Forest and that idea might be the case. “The action will be more visceral than you’ve seen in Robin Hood films before,” Hegeland said. “I don’t think a single person swings on a rope in this movie.”
The cast is very impressive and includes Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, William Hurt, Matthew Macfadyen, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, Léa Seydoux, Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand, Alan Doyle, Danny Huston and the great Max von Sydow.
Last we heard, the film was still Untitled, but Russell Crowe told Australian radio a few months ago that Scott planned to adopt the simple, and probably effective, title of “Robin Hood.”Some set video of Cate Blanchett and Russell Crowe (that can’t be embedded unfortunately) can be seen here and here. Asked why take on Robin Hood again, Crowe’s answer is rather simple. “Well, what’s the good one, mate? The Mel Brooks one is still pretty crappy. No disrespect to the makers of the film or Kevin [Costner], but when you look at the film, but when you look back at the ‘Prince Of Thieves,’ it’s like watching an extended Jon Bon Jovi video clip.”
Oooh, director Kevin Reynold and Kevin Costner’s ’80s hair, you’ve both been put on blast. He also defends an old, would-be cast mate. “Sienna [Miller] would have been great,” but when asked if she was too young he says, “I think so.” Crowe also says the scale is epic and the picture will no doubt be compared to “Gladiator.” He also adds that he signed on not knowing which role he would take initially, but says he agreed to sign on with the understanding they would not be working with the original 2006 script. There also appears to be no Cate Blanchett photos in “Robin Hood” online, but the video does reveal she’ll be sporting dark brown hair and not her blond tresses. And it looks like she takes up arms in the picture too and isn’t just a damsel in distress.
The film is still set for a May 14, 2010 release. Will we get some sort of teaser trailer before the year is over?
