WB Developing New Films Based On ‘Gremlins’ & ‘Goonies’

It looks like two of the most beloved films from the 1980s are getting revived over at Warner Bros. Though it’s unclear who exactly is involved.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is currently in development on a new film in the “Gremlins” franchise, as well as a new “Goonies” movie. As far “Gremlins” goes, it appears the new film is going to be coming from filmmaker Chris Columbus. “Goonies,” on the other hand, is just a treatment, as of now.

Of the two projects, perhaps “Goonies” is the most interesting. That film is one of the most cherished films of the ‘80s, with an all-star cast of child actors. It’s a film that people would probably adore seeing return, but it’s unclear how that is going to happen. Pure speculation would say that you’re probably looking at a legacy sequel sort of thing, where some of the original cast returns, but the film focuses on a new group of kids going on an adventure. That makes the most sense. But we’ll just have to wait and see.

The new “Gremlins” film is less shocking. WB has been toying with the “Gremlins” franchise for a while now, including a kid’s animated series, “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai,” which has run for two seasons on Max. Chris Columbus, who was the writer of the original “Gremlins” film, is said to be part of the new “Gremlins” film. You would also hope that Joe Dante would be involved in some way too, considering the franchise really is his baby.

It’s obviously too early to know when we might see the new “Gremlins” and “Goonies” show up in theaters. But we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on the development.
