Somehow we missed the fact that there was going to be a Dusty Springfield biopic. Nicole Kidman is supposed to play the torchy, troubled singer in an upcoming biopic.
Today, Vulture says that “The Hours” writer Michael Cunningham – who “knows from troubled women” – told them just last night that he is writing the screenplay.
“She was a great artist who no one knew what to do with,” Cunningham told the New York magazine blog. “She was coming into her full powers at the same time the Beatles were,” he said. “But she is clearly going into history with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.”
So would the biopic include the lonely years in exile from the U.K. in Hollywood, the drinking and the drugging, and the tortured bisexual/lesbian feelings that wove through her checkered career, which ended when she died of cancer in 1999? “Yeah,” he promised. “It’s the real Dusty.”
Rumors had surfaced about this biopic before in the British press. Ang Lee was supposedly once attached to direct with Kate Moss in the lead (and Charlize Theron was supposed to be her lover), but this rumor turned out to be totally fabricated, according to a producer for “Brokeback Mountain.”Watch: Dusty Springfield – “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself”
