‘NOLA King’: Samuel L. Jackson To Star In Paramount+’s ‘Tulsa King’ Spinoff, The Actor’s First Leading TV Role

Tulsa King” fans already knew Samuel L. Jackson joins the show’s cast in the upcoming third season of Taylor Sheridan‘s Paramount+ hit opposite star Sylvester Stallone. But that’s not the last time Jackson’s character Russell Lee Washington Jr. will show up in that TV universe.  He’ll also headine “NOLA King,” the first “Tulsa King” spinoff, as the character, and it’s the first time Jackson headlines a TV series.

Is it wild that Paramount+ greenlights “NOLA King” before audiences meet Russell in “Tulsa King” S3? Hardly. Taylor Sheridan’s TV empire still reigns supreme on the streamer even after the end of “Yellowstone,” and the 76-year-old Jackson is a legend in his own right.

Here’s a synopsis for “NOLA King,” courtesy of Paramount+ (fair warning: there are minor spoilers for “Tulsa King” S3):

NOLA KING follows Russell Lee Washington Jr. (Jackson) who, after befriending Dwight Manfredi (Stallone) during a ten-year stint in federal prison, is sent to Tulsa by New York’s Renzetti crime family to take Dwight out once and for all. Inspired by what Dwight created in Tulsa and impressed with the possibilities of second chances, Washington returns to New Orleans, the home he abandoned forty-years ago, to rekindle his relationship with his family and friends, and to take control of the city he left behind. In so doing, he incurs the wrath of his former employers in New York, and makes himself vulnerable to old NOLA foes, both criminal and cop.

No word on who will join Jackson on the cast sheet of “NOLA King,” but expect news on that as “Tulsa King” S3 approaches its premiere date this September.  Sheridan leads executive producers on the series with Stallone, Jackson, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Michael Friedman, and Keith Cox. “NOLA King” is a MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios production, with Paramount Global Content Distribution distributing outside Paramount+ markets.

“Samuel L. Jackson brings unparalleled presence and global appeal, making him the perfect choice to maximize the momentum of one of our biggest hits and transform it into a hit franchise,” said Chris McCarthy, Co-CEO of Paramount Global and President of SHOWTIME/MTV Entertainment in a press statement. “Building on the breakout success of Sylvester Stallone’s “Tulsa King,” audiences will now experience the full force of Jackson’s dynamic, layered performance, supercharging one of Paramount+’s flagship series.”

It’s safe to expect “NOLA King” will premiere on Paramount+ sometime next year. As for an official premiere date for “Tulsa King” S3? Expect Paramount+ to announce that very soon.
