‘Nosferatu’ First Look: Robert Eggers Is Aiming To Create A Gothic Horror Movie That Is “Actually Scary”

One of the most anticipated films of 2024 is, without a doubt, Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” remake. After three films in a row that are all pretty great (“The Witch,” “The Lighthouse,” “The Northman”), Eggers is taking on one of the iconic horror tales, and we finally have a first look at the remake.

Thanks to Empire, we have a first look at “Nosferatu,” the upcoming Robert Eggers film starring Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe. The image just shows Lily-Rose Depp looking horrified as a shadow in the form of a claw (presumably from Nosferatu) covers her face. It doesn’t give away much of the film, especially when people are dying to see Skarsgård’s take on the title character. But it does show that Eggers is aiming to create a truly scary horror film.

“Yeah, it’s a scary film. It’s a horror movie. It’s a Gothic horror movie,” said Eggers. “And I do think that there hasn’t been an old-school Gothic movie that’s actually scary in a while. And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case.”

As for Skarsgård and his transformation into the villainous Nosferatu, the filmmaker said the actor’s take is unique, but he still was influenced by the amazing actors who have taken on the role before him, namely Max Schreck and Klaus Kinski.

“He felt like honoring who had come before him. It’s all very subtle,” Eggers said. “But I think the main thing is that he’s even more a folk vampire. In my opinion he looks like a dead Transylvanian nobleman, and in a way that we’ve never actually seen what an actual dead Transylvanian nobleman would look like and be dressed like.”

As mentioned, considering Eggers has yet to really miss with his films, there’s no doubt people are going to be excited by “Nosferatu.” An exact release date hasn’t be announced yet. You can see the first-look image below:
