Gonzo social media satire has become one of the most crowd-pleasing subgenres in the last few years. From Eugene Kotlyarenko’s rideshare horror show “Spree,” which, in spite of a pandemic-hampered box office run, gained considerable notoriety back in 2020, to Adam McKay’s acclaimed disaster-comedy “Don’t Look Up,” which set a new record for the most viewing hours in a single week on Netflix and went on to get four Academy Award nominations. This July, Searchlight’s new dark comedy, “Not Okay,” will be looking to fill the same niche.
The trailer for “Not Okay” begins with a warning: “This film contains an unlikeable female protagonist. Viewer discretion advised.” The unlikeable protagonist in question is Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch), an aimless and friendless writer who fakes a trip to Paris on her Instagram page. And why is she so unlikeable? During the fake trip, a terrorist attack rocks the city, forcing Danni to incorporate the chaos and drama of the tragedy into her sham vacation posts. But as the cracks in her feigned survivor status emerge, karma comes knocking, and Danni’s online world soon implodes.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch), an aimless aspiring writer with no friends, no romantic prospects and — worst of all — no followers, fakes an Instagram-friendly trip to Paris in the hopes of boosting her social media clout. When a terrifying incident strikes the City of Lights, Danni unwittingly falls into a lie bigger than she ever imagined. She “returns” a hero, even striking up an unlikely friendship with Rowan (Mia Isaac), a real trauma survivor dedicated to societal change, and scooping up the man of her dreams Colin (Dylan O’Brien). As an influencer and advocate, Danni finally has the life and audience she always wanted. But it’s only a matter of time before the façade cracks, and she learns the hard way that the Internet loves a takedown.
Directed by Quinn Shephard (“Blame”), “Not Okay” also stars Mia Isaac as Rowan, a school-shooting survivor whom Danni befriends after her (non-)ordeal in Paris, and Dylan O’Brien as Colin, the man of Danni’s dreams, whose interest is piqued by Danni’s newfound fame.
This will be the second time Deutch and O’Brien have teamed up this year, having previously worked together on Graham Moore’s crime drama, “The Outfit.”
“Not Okay” debuts on Hulu on July 29. Watch the final trailer below.
