'OD' Teaser: Jordan Peele Teaming Up With Hideo Kojima On Horror Video Game That Mixes Games & Cinema Into "A New Form Of Media"

If you’re not a fan of video games, it’s quite likely the name Hideo Kojima doesn’t mean a whole lot to you. However, suffice it to say, he’s one of the most talented and acclaimed video game creators to ever live. And not only that, he’s a complete and utter film nerd, who consistently surrounds himself with friends like Nicolas Winding Refn and Guillermo del Toro, among many more. And for his next project, a game that he hesitates to even call a true video game, “OD,” he’s teaming up with none other than Jordan Peele and an all-star cast.

As revealed at the recent Game Awards, Hideo Kojima unveiled some information, including a teaser, for his upcoming project “OD.” Not only that, he brought out Jordan Peele as one of his collaborators on the creation of the video game. Plot details are thin, but “OD” apparently “explores the concept of testing your fear threshold, and what it means to OD on fear — while blurring the boundaries of gaming and film.”

It’s that last little bit that makes this something we’re checking out at The Playlist. Typically, we don’t cover video games, but Kojima has made it a point to include so many filmmakers and A-list acting talent in his projects that he really does often blur the idea of video game and cinema. Look at “Death Stranding,” for example. While not as beloved as a video game, the project caught the attention of film fans for including talent such as actors Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Troy Baker, Tommie Earl Jenkins, and Lindsay Wagner, as well as the aforementioned Nicolas Winding Refn and Guillermo del Toro.

For “OD,” in addition to Peele, the game stars Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier, among others. And Kojima doesn’t even want to describe “OD” as a video game, instead calling it a “new form of media.”

“We are working with Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology to take on the challenge of creating a very unique, immersive and totally new style of game — or rather, a new form of media,” Kojima said.

It’s still unclear when we might see “OD” get a release date, but even if you’re not a fan of video games, this is a project you should probably keep your eye on. We could be looking at something very special and unique.
