It’s not the Oscars without a big of song, and this year, with “La La Land” entering the show with a historic 14 nominations, it was only natural that the show kicked off with a big musical number.
Justin Timberlake got the night going with “Can’t Stop The Feeling,” and the lively performance paved the way for the rest of the musical numbers, which were mostly solid. Auli’i Cravalho, the 16 year-old star from Disney‘s “Moana,” did a nice job with “How Far I’ll Go” (with a little intro help from Lin-Manuel Miranda). John Legend completely slayed the Oscar winning “City Of Stars” from “La La Land,” while Sting delivered the mostly forgettable “The Empty Chair” which is about all we needed.

Meanwhile Sara Bareilles sang Joni Mitchell‘s “Both Sides Now” during the In Memoriam segment, and did a good job, though there were some gaffes in the video, and some snubs (no Garry Shandling?).
