This year, the Oscars decided to go fairly safe with its Best Picture nominees. Some people, namely superhero film fans, were hoping for a curveball with a “Spider-Man: No Way Home” addition to the category. Alas, the Oscar nominations didn’t feel the superhero film was one of the top 10 of the year. But, if you’re one of those superhero film fans hoping to get some sort of recognition for ‘No Way Home’ or any other perceived snubs, you’ll get your chance for retribution on Twitter.

According to Twitter and the Academy, film fans will get a chance on social media and through a website to vote for the “Oscars Fan Favorite” award. This will allow anyone on Twitter to nominate whatever film they want as the fan favorite of 2021. Surely, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will get a number of votes, but that doesn’t mean superheroes have to rule the voting process.
Perhaps, you’re a fan of polarizing but significant films like “Lamb” or “The Green Knight?” What about Daniel Craig’s 007 swansong, “No Time to Die?” Or maybe you’re someone who likes to watch the world burn and will organize a grassroots campaign to make “F9” the fan-favorite? (Can we please make that happen? Pretty please?)
Either way, if you vote for a film, you’re entered in a sweepstakes for a trip or something. So, there’s that incentive, as well. You don’t have to be a diehard ‘Spider-Man’ fan or a weirdo who wants to see a ‘Fast & Furious‘ film recognized by the Academy to vote. You can just be someone who likes free stuff, too.
Best of all, this new Oscars category will have its winner revealed during the regular Oscars telecast on March 27. So, get to voting and let’s watch the Oscars start to morph into the MTV Movie Awards, one award at a time.
