The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed how the 90th Oscar nominations will be unveiled a week from today on Tuesday, Jan. 23. Last year, the Academy Award nods broke from the traditional live announcement with a taped reveal. This year it’s going to be a bit of a mix of the old and the relatively new.

At 5:22 a.m. PST, the nominees will be announced in the following “below the line” categories (listed here in no particular order): Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Production Design, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. These nominations will be taped and announced on a livestream on Oscars.com and the Academy’s digital plantforms (ie, Facebook and possibly Twitter).
At 5:38:30 a.m. PST, the nominees will be announced in the following categories (listed here in no particular order): Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Animated Feature Film, Directing, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Foreign Language Film, Original Song, Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay. These nominations will be announced live, as they have been for many years, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
The Academy has not reveal who will be making the live announcement in their release.
There was some disappointment from television media and publicists who have covered the Oscars for years that there was no live component to the 89th Academy Awards. While everyone groans about getting up so early on the West Coast (and, honestly, there is still no reason to do it so early in the morning in this hour on the hour breaking news cycle) there was something about the live aspect that appealed to both the live morning show cutaways and for consultants and publicists wanting to hear the results of sometimes six months of work in person.

The 90th Academy Awards will be announced on Sunday, March 4, 2018 during a broadcast that begins at 8 PM ET, 5 PM PT on ABC.
