Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider may not be household names, but you’ve seen their work for years. They wrote some of the more memorable sketches on “Saturday Night Live” this decade and were co-head writers for the 2016-2017 season. They have spent the last year, however, shepherding their own baby, the critically acclaimed series “The Other Two.”
The Comedy Central program follows brother and sister Carey and Brooke Dubek (Drew Tarver, Helene Yorke) as they try to navigate the surprising pop star success of their much younger brother Chase aka ChaseDreams (Case Walker). Over a 10 episode first season Carey comes to terms with his sexuality, Brooke realizes she might have found a career she’s good at and Chase? Well, Chase is such a nice guy he wrote a song “My Brother’s Gay And That’s OK.” The series also features Molly Shannon as Pat, the family’s consistently naive but industry lucky matriarch, and Ken Olin as Chase’s manager who is trying so hard to be cool it’s cringe-worthy.
With Emmy season in full swing, Kelly and Schneider joined the podcast to talk about the origins of “The Other Two,” making ChaseDreams look like a real pop star on a budget and reflect on some of the more memorable individual moments of the first season including Kate Berlant’s iconic line reading of “I’m gagging for you faggot” which instantly became a Twitter meme with a shelf life much longer than expected.

Speaking of gagging, your host was caught up with a god-awful gagging cough a few weeks ago that has finally subsided. Unfortunately, it has caused me to partially lose my voice. We’ll know if this is the new normal by the next Four Quadrant episode (maybe).
