'Outside In' Trailer: Edie Falco & Jay Duplass Make A Connection

Lynn Shelton is one of those filmmakers who can do it all. The multi-hyphenate has an impressive resume of acting, editing and producing credits, and has appeared and directed films and several episodes of television shows like “Mad Men,” “Casual,” and “Master of None” to name a few). After serving 20 years for the crime of essentially being in the wrong place at the wrong time, 38-year-old Chris (Jay Duplass) is granted early parole thanks largely to the tireless advocacy of Carol (Edie Falco), his former high-school teacher. As he struggles with the challenges of navigating the modern world as an ex-con, and with a fraught relationship with his brother Ted (Ben Schwartz), Chris ends up confessing his romantic love for Carol — a love that, given her marital status, Carol cannot reciprocate. Or can she? Carol longs for something her husband no longer provides. Meanwhile, Carol’s daughter Hildy (Kaitlyn Dever) befriends Chris, finding a kindred spirit in this awkward, tormented older guy.

Before becoming a director, Shelton was worried that she had missed her chance since she was in her mid-30s. However, after hearing legendary French director Claire Denis speak in 2003 about making her first film at 40, Shelton found her confidence. Since then, Shelton has become a festival darling with all eight of her films. “Outside In” premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival where The Playlist called it “a picture that slowly seeps into the skin.”

The Orchard will release “Outside In” in New York and Los Angeles on March 30 and then all digital platforms on April 3.
