When you think about the performances in the most recent “Planet of the Apes” trilogy, the name that sticks out above all the rest is Andy Serkis as the lead ape, Cesar. So, when it was announced that director Wes Ball and 20th Century Studios were teaming up to deliver a brand-new ‘Apes’ film, the question remained—who could possibly replace Serkis as the main ape of the new chapter in the franchise? Well, apparently, it’s Owen Teague.
According to Deadline, Owen Teague has been cast in the lead role, as an ape, in the upcoming “Planet of the Apes” sequel coming from 20th Century Studios. Not much is known about the film other than it’s a sequel and will attempt to build off the work done in the previous ‘Apes’ trilogy. Teague is set to play the lead ape, with the help of mo-cap, you have to assume. The studio is still on the hunt for an actor to take the lead human role.
Teague is probably best known for his roles in both “It” films, as well as the Netflix drama, “Bloodline.” Recently, he had a starring role in the Stephen King series adaptation, “The Stand.” His next film is “Reptile,” where he co-stars alongside Alicia Silverstone, Benicio del Toro, and Justin Timberlake.
No release date has been given for the new “Planet of the Apes” film. As we’ve known for a while, the film is directed by Wes Ball, who previously worked on the “Maze Runner” franchise. 20th Century Studios is said to be really excited about continuing the acclaimed franchise. And if things go as planned, the new sequel is said to begin filming later this year.
