Can someone be replaced without complications? When it comes to pop culture, there’s a constant flow of trends, but sometimes, a memorable figure breaks through to defy it all. Carl Nargle is striving to maintain his own relevance in IFC Films’ “Paint.” The comedy stars Owen Wilson as the unforgettable character with more than a passing resemblance to public broadcasting icon Bob Ross; Nargle’s place as Vermont’s top TV painter is jeopardized when an interloper threatens to destroy everything. The project’s quirky sensibilities set it apart from Wilson’s mainstream offerings this year — Season 2 of “Loki” and “Haunted Mansion.” In addition to Wilson, the cast includes Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ciara Renee, Lusia Strus, Stephen Root, and Lucy Freyer.
Writer and director Brit McAdams makes his feature film debut with this comedic take on the world of public television. Prior to “Paint,” McAdams co-directed the documentary “Triviatown.” Its inspection of what is deemed the world’s largest trivia contest offers a refreshing viewpoint and subject that could bolster his current comedy’s real-world perspective. McAdams also directed several episodes of Comedy Central’s “Tosh.0” and co-directed the documentary “Katt Williams: American Hustle.”
The film’s official synopsis:
Owen Wilson stars as Carl Nargle, Vermont’s #1 public TV painter who is convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, and fans hanging on his every stroke… until a younger, better artist steals everything (and everyone) Carl loves.
A painting legend finds his life turned upside down in “Paint.” The film opens exclusively in theaters on April 7. Watch the new trailer below.
