Paul Feig has directed films with thrills, comedy, romance, and ghosts. But his upcoming project with Universal puts him in a position he’s never been in before — directing a horror film.
According to Deadline, Feig has agreed to write and direct the upcoming film, “Dark Army.” The film, which is based on an original idea from the filmmaker, is said to be loosely connected to the Universal Monsters Dark Universe concept that the studio has been hoping to launch for years now, which is getting a reset with the upcoming Blumhouse film “The Invisible Man.”
While the plot is being kept under wraps, the film is said to feature some of the classic Universal Monsters, alongside some original characters created by the filmmaker. The film isn’t supposed to be directly tied into the world of “The Invisible Man,” but instead, the studio is going for a more loosely defined cinematic universe, filled with projects that have connections but not in the same way that Marvel Studios does with the MCU.
As alluded to before, Feig is a big name filmmaker that has previously directed films such as “Bridesmaids,” “Spy,” and the ill-fated 2016 “Ghostbusters” reboot. Last year, he surprised folks with his solid mystery thriller “A Simple Favor.” And later this year, he’s tackling the holiday rom-com with the upcoming “Last Christmas,” starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding.
No word on when production on “Dark Army” might begin, but you have to imagine that Universal would like to get the ball rolling on this one as soon as possible, especially considering “The Invisible Man” should be arriving in theaters on February 28, 2020.
