Got a Tip?

Pedro Almodóvar Would Direct A ‘Batgirl’ Film If He Can “Do It My Own Way”

Ok, so today we learned Jane Campion will never take on a superhero film because she “actually hates” them. But that doesn’t mean that every auteur filmmaker is anti-superhero, right? To serve as the yin to Campion’s yang, we have Pedro Almodóvar, who spoke to Variety and gave a very different answer.

You see, not only does Almodóvar have an interest in actually tackling a superhero film, he even knows which hero it would be. The only problem is that he wants complete creative freedom and the hero he’s interested in is already taken. So, yeah…

“I would like to do something with Batgirl, but I would have to do it in my own way,” he said.

Even the most jaded of film fans would have to be interested in the man behind the new film “Parallel Mothers” and other female-focused features tackling a superhero like Batgirl. Of course, that is basically a moot point considering WarnerMedia is already hard at work on a “Batgirl” film with directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. No offense to those fine directors, but you have to think that maybe WB would have liked the chance to talk to Almodóvar about that “Batgirl” idea first, huh?

Then again, WB is not known for its creative freedom with superhero films, as we’ve seen the studio have a heavy hand when crafting DC films. So, it’s unlikely that even Almodóvar could come in and demand freedom. Alas, it’s all for naught anyway, as that “Batgirl” ship has sailed. But maybe there’s another female superhero he’d be interested in?

Even though his “Batgirl” idea is likely never going to see the light of day, film fans can still enjoy Almodóvar’s greatness in “Parallel Mothers,” which hits theaters on December 24.
