Got a Tip?

Pedro Almodovar Would Like To Make A Comedy Soon But Isn’t Sure That It’s Possible

As we jump headfirst into awards season, with various guilds and organizations handing out trophies to the very best the film industry brought us in 2019, filmmaker Pedro Almodovar is going to be very busy. His new film, “Pain & Glory,” is getting a ton of acclaim and rightfully so, as the drama is one of the most personal, emotional projects the director has ever released. But according to Almodovar, for his next film, he’s keen on returning to more comedic fare, though he’s not sure if that’s possible.

After doing a string of dramas, Almodovar said, while speaking at the recent BAFTA Screenwriters Lecture in London (via Deadline), that he would be interested in working on something a bit more lighthearted, but it’s not up to him whether or not it happens.

“I would like to come back to comedy, but I don’t know how and when,” said Almodovar. “I really would like to write a new comedy. But I’m not the owner of the story, the story comes to me and I have the first idea, and the latest ideas are always very dramatic and then I have to play my role as the medium of the narrative to develop them the best I can.”

Previously, the filmmaker directed lighter fare, with a healthy amount of comedy, such as “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” and “Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!” But his most recent film, the acclaimed “Pain & Glory” is very much a drama. And Almodovar isn’t so sure as to why his ideas have tended to venture more into dramatic areas.

He added, “But it’s true that it’s been a while since I’ve had a comedy idea. I don’t know if it’s the passage of time, or if I’m just getting old, but I would like to recover the spirit of those early films.”

While there are certainly fans that would love to see the filmmaker come back with a comedy for his next feature, if he continues to pump out films with the same quality as “Pain & Glory,” it doesn’t matter what genre they’re part of. They’re going to be must-sees anyhow.
