Peter Sarsgaard To Play Dr. Hector Hammond In 'Green Lantern'

The Hollywood Reporter, has revealed that Peter Sarsgaard is in talks to play Dr. Hector Hammond in Martin Campbell’s adaptation of “Green Lantern” starring Ryan Reynolds.

For those of you unfamiliar with the comic, Dr. Hector Hammond is “the pathologist son of a senator who is seen as a disappointment in his father’s eyes. He becomes infused with psychic powers when he discovers a meteor.” In the comics he gets his hands on a duplicate power ring, and faces off against the Green Lantern. But what does this mean for Sinestro? Back in October it was rumored that Jackie Earle Haley was being sought for the role (it later turned out to be bunk), and from what we hear, the character is still set to make an appearance but will be set up as the baddie for the inevitable “Green Lantern 2.” And since Sinestro started out as a mentor in the comics, this might fit perfectly.

With production starting in ten weeks, it seems director Martin Campbell is eager to get his cast together and pre-production started. Just a few days ago, Blake Lively was cast as the love interest, Carol Ferris, beating out the likes of Keri Russell and Jennifer Garner for the part. And of course, as you know already know, Ryan Reynolds will be wearing the green tights (he beat Justin Timberlake and Bradley Cooper for the role). The Hollywood Reporter also dropped that shooting is set to take place in New Orleans, which due to the state’s generous tax incentives, probably allowed the production to move away from Mexico where it was long rumored to film.

“The Green Lantern” will hit theaters on June 17, 2011.
