You may not remember, but Disney’s original “Pete’s Dragon” from 1977 was actually a musical. While David Lowery’s 2016 version won’t feature actors belting it out on camera, the newly released tracklist shows that it won’t be pushing music to the side.
Disney has enlisted a talented set of musicians to fill the “Pete’s Dragon” soundtrack, which features three original songs written for the film. Up-and-coming violinist, dancer, composer, and YouTube star Lindsey Stirling will perform with singer-songwriter Andrew McMahon on the original end-credit track “Something Wild.” Stirling, who is currently touring and preparing to release her third studio album, will also be featured on the original score created by Daniel Hart, who also wrote a terrific score for Lowery’s “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.”

Big name bands and artists will appear on the soundtrack as well, with members of The Lumineers performing “Nobody Knows,” and singer-songwriter Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy singing “The Dragon Song.” The Will Sheff-fronted Okkervil River will bring back a main track on the original film with a cover of “Candle On The Water,” and the soundtrack will also feature songs by St. Vincent and Leonard Cohen.
We sense an alternative, folksy undertone from this collection of artists, which should work well with the fantasy storyline that takes place in the woods. The original motion picture soundtrack will be released by Walt Disney Records on August 12th, and it is currently available for pre-ordering on Amazon Music, iTunes, and various other streaming services.
