Pie In The Sky Rumor: Robert De Niro & Joe Pesci To Reteam For David O. Russell’s ‘Uncharted’

Mark Wahlberg May Be Interested As Well

So bear in mind, this is from Roger Friedman, the same guy who saw Tony Gilroy at a screening for “127 Hours” and spun a haphazard rumor that he wanted James Franco to lead “The Bourne Legacy.”

Anyway, the latest bit of probably very tenuous rumor news from Showbiz 411 posits that Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci might reteam for David O. Russell‘s upcoming adaptation of the video game “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.” As per usual, Friedman showcases his ignorance by stating, “word is the actual video game didn’t have much there aside from a concept and a name,” when in fact the very popular game follows Nathan Drake, a descendant of Sir Francis Drake and a treasure hunter, as he searches for the lost treasure of El Dorado, with the help of a journalist. Friedman claims that Russell, who is rewriting the script by “Conan” scribes Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, will change the story to have “something to do with antiquities dealers in New York.”

So, let’s get this straight. According to this rumor, Sony is going to allow David O. Russell to completely overhaul the very concept of a video game adaptation? Sorry dude, unless they want to piss off fanboys around the world, they are not changing the swashbuckling tale of Nathan Drake kicking ass in the Amazon to the musty world of New York antiquities. Either Friedman has his wires crossed, or is once again taking two bits of info from two wildly different places and mashing them together into something that doesn’t make much sense.

At any rate he also posits that Mark Wahlberg is interested in the project (well, duh, of course he would be given his lengthy working relationship with Russell), but since Russell is still writing the script and is likely to shoot his road-comedy “Old St. Louis” next, we don’t imagine any of this is much more than “hey wouldn’t that be cool if we got those guys” ideas on a notepad on someone’s desk. At best. And until a script is actually finished that people can read, we can’t imagine any of these guys are clearing out their schedules.
